Living in time
Follow me on Facebook Follow me on Instagram I had booked a last minute race to Tasmania in a bid to photograph Cradle Mountain under snow and had fortunately been able to make true on that plan. After a successful night and morning photographing the picturesque Kelvedon Beach in the Great Oyster Bay I was now getting ready to slowly make my way back to Launceston for my 3pm return flight to Sydney. “Horseshoe Falls” I have never been to Horseshoe Falls… The weather down south was certainly looking suitable... Google Maps was suggesting I needed 2hrs 15min to make it to Mount Field National Park and another 2hr 45min to return to Launceston. It was 8am. As this photo would suggest I did, indeed, make it to Mount Field National Park that day and I am also pleased to say that I made my return flight to Sydney. View large and, as always, thanks for looking!

The Cypresses of Oysterville (1890s)
John Crellin House - 1867 The house was built by Tom Crellin's older brother using plans he brought from his native Isle of Man. From the bay it is obvious that both Crellin houses (the white and green) were built using the same plans, though younger brother Tom added bay windows and a bit more gingerbread to his. From 1920 until WWII this was the site of the Heckes Inn, listed in the Duncan Hines Travel Guides as an outstanding eating place. The Monterey Cypress trees. . . were brought from California in the 1890s as ballast on an oyster schooner. www.oysterville.org/walking-tour ====================== In the mid 1800s, the village of Oysterville began to prosper after Chief Nahcati introduced the town’s founders, R.H. Espy and I.A. Clark, to oysters. The rich oyster beds of Willapa Bay were soon responsible for Oysterville’s growing riches, as the town became a major competitor with other oyster companies. Once the county seat, with a college, two hotels and a weekly newspaper, the town began to decline when, in 1880, the long-awaited Clamshell Railroad ended at Nahcotta and native oysters began to become scarce. In 1893, the county seat was stolen by raiders in the middle of the night and taken to South Bend. Today, the entire community is on the National Historic Register and the original one-room schoolhouse and church are still in use for community events. The Cypresses of Oysterville (Best Seen Large)
This row of Monterey cypresses is one of Oysterville, Washington's landmarks. The Walking Tour of Oysterville says they "were brought from California in the 1890s as ballast on an oyster schooner." Today at last I was able to take a photo that did justice to these mighty trees. I believe the cloudy skies made the difference. www.oysterville.org/walking-tour Please look for the church in the background. Here is its story, written by Sydney Stevens, the great-granddaughter of Oysterville founder R.H. Espy: Price of the Oysterville Church It’s been a matter of public record and family history that, back in 1892, my great-grandfather, R. H. Espy, donated the land and the sum of $1500 for the building of the Baptist Church in Oysterville . As for who did the actual construction, the record is silent. Was it Master Carpenter John Peter Paul (1828-1910) who built the Pacific County Courthouse in Oysterville in 1875? Or was 1892 too late for him to consider a project such as the church with its very tall steeple and intricate finials? There has been some speculation, also, about where the plans came from. Years ago, a visitor said that she thought the design was a kind of boiler plate or cookie cutter plan put out by the Methodist Church during the nineteenth century. That idea seemed to be corroborated when we realized that the old Methodist Church in Bay Center looked to be identical to our Baptist Church in Oysterville. New information came just the other day through the Oysterville Restoration Foundation website. David Peterson of Nicholson Kovalchick Architects in Seattle sent a back issue of the “The New Jersey Churchscape,” The 2009 issue provides extensive news about church architecture among Presbyterians, Baptists, and Methodists during the second half of the nineteenth century: According to an 1885 magazine published by the Methodist church, the BCE (Board of Church Extension) began in 1870 by publishing ‘illustrations and brief descriptions’ of churches, and referred parties interested to the architects who could furnish them. Then we had a few plans lithographed, with specifications printed, which we could furnish at greatly reduced rates…TAKE NO STEPS TOWARD BUILDING BEFORE SECURING OUR CATALOGUE.” In 1876 the BCE contracted with Benjamin D. Price, Architect, to prepare plans for a range of affordable churches from very simple structures to rather stylish ones, mostly with a Gothic flavor. By 1885, Price had prepared 67 church plans and the Board had sold 1,975 copies of these plans by mail, at a cost ranging from $2 to $50. An illustration shows a drawing for a church similar (but not identical) to the Oysterville Church and includes three different sets of measurements. The plans were listed for $8.00 for the smallest, $9.00 for the medium-sized and $10.00 for the largest. The final notation says: Approximate cost, $900 to $1600. Presumably, that was an estimate for the cost of construction. There still is much room for speculation. Did the Oysterville Baptists use their $1500 to buy plans for the smallest ($900) church and then spend their remaining money for lumber? Or were the plans sold kit-fashion, complete with dimension lumber and nails, as in the later Sears Roebuck Company’s Modern Homes program? Would that have left money to hire the carpenter? As I often remark, for every new bit of information, ten more questions surface. But it’s nice to know that Oysterville, even 120 years ago, was in tune with the greater world. sydneyofoysterville.com/2011/price-of-the-oysterville-chu...
Broadway Beauties: Hotel Clare, Central Sydney.
The "Eora people" was the name given to the coastal Aborigines around Sydney. Central Sydney is therefore often referred to as "Eora Country". Within the City of Sydney local government area, the traditional owners are the Cadigal and Wangal bands of the Eora. There is no written record of the name of the language spoken and currently there are debates as whether the coastal peoples spoke a separate language "Eora" or whether this was actually a dialect of the Dharug language. Remnant bushland in places like Blackwattle Bay retain elements of traditional plant, bird and animal life, including fish and rock oysters. With the invasion of the Sydney region, the Cadigal and Wangal people were decimated but there are descendants still living in Sydney today. All cities include many immigrants in their population. Aboriginal people from across the state have been attracted to suburbs such as Pyrmont, Balmain, Rozelle, Glebe and Redfern since the 1930s. Changes in government legislation in the 1960s provided freedom of movement enabling more Aboriginal people to choose to live in Sydney. The Kegroom Tavern, which was originally named the Hotel Clare, was designed by Sydney Warden, built by S.D.C. Kennedy and Bird Pty. Ltd. and opened in 1941. It replaced an earlier landmark hotel named Ryan's, which was demolished due to road widening along the southern side of Broadway. The building is one of five hotels constructed in this style in the city between 1838 and 1942; the others are the Australian (Broadway), Sutherlands, the Hollywood, and the Civic hotel. The Kegroom Tavern on opening attracted much favourable comment for its design and finishes. External use of colour, good use of modern materials, and tasteful decor, were all singled out for praise. The bars and toilets were located on the ground floor, residential accommodation on the first and second floors and a basement cellar included stores, cool room, boiler and other services. The building appears to have remained generally as built until 1969 at which time a relatively small programme of alterations and additions was carried out. A more substantial renovation was implemented in 1973/74 at which time the public bar was rebuilt and other alterations were carried out on the ground floor. More substantial changes in the same area were made in 1979. The greatest changes occurred in 1982/3 and in 1985. At that time major alterations were made to the food bar and ground floor new toilets were built. Significance: The Kegroom Tavern, originally named the Hotel Clare, is significant as a largely intact and operational hotel which has a direct relationship to the main entrance of the Carlton (Tooths) Brewery site. The building is one of five hotels constructed in this style in the city between 1838 and 1942; the others are the Australian (Broadway), Sutherlands, the Hollywood, and the Civic Hotel. The Kegroom Tavern has significance as the finest example of a well maintained corner hotel in the Inter-War Functionalist style in the CBD. The interior of the hotel is significant for the quality of the timber panelling and plaster Art Deco ceilings which have been retained largely intact, and which are fine examples of the interior decor in hotels of this period. The exterior of the building has aesthetic significance as an important element in the streetscape and as a fine example of the decorative style of the period. The building has social significance as part of the network of corner hotels that provided a social/recreational venue for the local community, and as one of the group of five brick hotels in similar style, located in close proximity to the Carlton (Tooths) Brewery. This site has a lengthy association with the hotel trade as an earlier hotel existed on it. ✓✓ Criteria A: Historical significance. The site has a lengthy association with the hotel trade and the building has significance for its association with the Carlton (Tooths) Brewery which it adjoins. Historic significance for its association with the realignment of Broadway in the late 1930s. The building replaced an earlier landmark hotel named Ryan's. Has historic significance locally. ✓✓ Criteria C: Aesthetic significance. Has aesthetic significance locally. Cultural:Significant as a largely intact example of the Inter-war Functionalist style. The significance of the building lies in the quality and condition of the detailing both internally and externally. The Art Deco style ceilings and timber panelling to the ground floor have significance as a fine example of the interior detailing of this style of corner hotel. ✓✓ Criteria D: Social significance. Significant for its association with the brewery which is reflected by its close physical association to the main entrance of the Carlton (Tooths) Brewery. Significant for its part in providing a social/recreational venue for the local community. Has social significance locally.Significant as a largely intact example of the Inter-war Functionalist style. The significance of the building lies in the quality and condition of the detailing both internally and externally. The Art Deco style ceilings and timber panelling to the ground floor have significance as a fine example of the interior detailing of this style of corner hotel. ✓✓ Criteria F: Rarity. A rare working example of the corner hotel which is largely intact both externally and internally. ✓✓ Criteria G: Representativeness. A fine example of a hotel the Inter-War Functionalist style which retains its original functions of bar and accommodation Source: New South Wales Heritage Register.

The R.H. Espy House (1871) Oysterville, Washington
About R.H.Espy and the Espy family: Author/historian Sydney Stevens says, “I often feel that the Espy family and Oysterville are so inter-related it is hard to know which has had the greatest influence upon the other.” Sydney, herself, is an Espy descendent and lives in Oysterville – the village that her great-grandfather, Robert Hamilton Espy co-founded with Isaac Alonzo Clark in 1854. Espy and Clark were guided to the area by Chinook Indian Chief Nahcati. The two young men eagerly began harvesting the native oysters of Shoalwater (now called Willapa) Bay, shipping them to California where hungry miners paid in gold for the succulent bivalves. Within weeks Oysterville became a rowdy, lusty boomtown – the busiest anchorage on the coast north of San Francisco. When the Washington territorial government urged communities to form a militia, Espy complied and was soon elected ‘Major.’ He helped establish a Baptist congregation in Oysterville and, in 1892, donated the land and money for the church building that still serves as centerpiece to the village. When the oysters ‘failed’ in the 1880s and most of the townsfolk left, including his old friend Clark, Espy, his wife, Julia Jefferson, and their seven children stayed on. In Major Espy’s dotage, when he needed looking after, his next-to-eldest son, Harry Albert Espy, moved back to his native Oysterville, bringing with him his own young family. Harry became a dairy farmer, and in the years that followed was elected justice of the peace, clerk of the school board, and Washington state senator representing Pacific and Wahkiakum Counties. He and his wife Helen Richardson’s seven children attended the one-room Oysterville School, went off to college and, eventually, to lives and careers far distant from the tiny hamlet. Even so, Oysterville was always considered ‘home.’ In 1971, Senator Espy’s youngest daughter, Dale, and her husband, Bill Little, retired to Oysterville and began to work on preserving the fragile remains of the once thriving boomtown. Their efforts, with the help their Oysterville friends and neighbors, resulted in the village’s designation as a National Historic District in 1976. In 1977, Dale’s brother Willard Espy’s hugely successful book, Oysterville: Roads to Grandpa’s Village brought nation-wide attention to the remote corner of southwest Washington. And, shortly before Willard’s death in 1999, the Willard Espy Literary Foundation was formed. The foundation, headquartered in Oysterville, continues to support writers and artists by offering month-long residencies there. Dale’s daughter, Sydney, and her husband, Nyel, now live in the Harry Espy home. Sydney’s part of the family legacy has been to ‘rescue’ the incredible collection of Espy family papers and documents, amassed over the century and a half of Oysterville’s history, and to turn the archive over to the Washington State Historical Research Center. Sydney’s book Dear Medora: Child of Oysterville’s Forgotten Years, based upon a small part of the collection, has been recently published by WSU Press. “I have no doubt that Oysterville and the Espy family will continue to nurture one another in generations to come,” says Sydney. “It’s simply the way it is.” sydneyofoysterville.com/espy-family-of-oysterville/ It’s hard for me to picture my great-grandfather, Robert Hamilton Espy, as a young, vigorous man. Let alone adventurous. Most of the pictures we have of him are when he was an old man. Even in his wedding picture, he looks quite staid and proper, as well he should have. By the time he married in 1870, he was forty-four years old. Middle-aged by the standards of the day. But when Hamilton (Yes! That’s how he was listed on the 1855 muster roll for the Pacific County Reserve Volunteer Rifle Company) paddled northward on Shoalwater Bay with his twenty-six-year-old friend Isaac Clark, he was in his prime. He was twenty-eight and looking forward to a venture in the oyster trade. As they kept Espy’s rendezvous with Klickeas, it is doubtful that either man realized that their lives and the lives of their descendants would forever be associated with the shore where they made landfall. The date was April 12, 1854. The two men built a cabin of alder logs a few hundred feet from where they had landed and there they lived for next four years. Unlike the “Bruce Boys” across the Bay, Hamilton and Isaac were not opposed to sharing the Bay’s bounty and oyster prospectors converged on the area. In 1855 “Oysterville” (said to have been named by Elvira Stevens of the Stevens Hotel) was made the Pacific County Seat, shipped 50,000 bushel baskets of oysters to San Francisco, and quickly became the most important anchorage north of the Columbia River. sydneyofoysterville.com/tag/r-h-espy/
Port Lincoln, South Australia
When Matthew Flinders reached the harbour in February, 1802 he named it "in honour of my native province". Flinders had been born at Donington in Lincolnshire on 16 March 1774. He named the bay, island and point after his home town of Boston and Cape Donington was named after his birthplace. Port Lincoln is the only city on the Eyre Peninsula. Located on Boston Bay (a bay which is more than three and a half times the size of Sydney Harbour and, thus, the largest natural harbour in Australia) and nestled on the easterly side of the Eyre Peninsula, Port Lincoln has grown because it has been the most important grain and fishing port on the peninsula. It is considered by many to be idyllic with an annual rainfall of 488 mm and a near-perfect Mediterranean climate of cool winters and warm, dry summers. Today it is a successful commercial centre which is economically driven by the grain-handling facilities (the foreshore is dominated by the 47-metre-high grain silos which can load barley and wheat at a rate of 1500 tonnes per hour); the canning and fish processing works; lambs, wool and beef, fertiliser production and, in recent times, the vast wealth which has been made as a result of tuna farming for the Japanese market. Port Lincoln has Australia's largest commercial fishing fleet (which makes it one of the wealthiest cities in Australia) and fish farming has grown so that there are now tuna farms, kingfish farms, mussel farms, abalone farms, oyster farms and even seahorse farms in the area. The primary appeal of the city lies in its exceptional seafood restaurants; its excellent opportunities for fishing; and the range of water-based activities which an attractive city on a protected bay can offer. In the 1830s it was considered as a possible state capital. Only the lack of a reliable water supply prevented it from becoming the capital of South Australia. 27/365 2019

Oysterville Picket Fence
This is one of the few new-looking picket fences in Oysterville. Most of them are grey and support thriving communities of a plant that's like Spanish moss, only much shorter. In the mid 1800s, the village of Oysterville began to prosper after Chief Nahcati introduced the town’s founders, R.H. The church hosts summer vespers and the school is alive during the August Jazz & Oysters in Oysterville. The Oysterville Post Office is oldest continuously operating Post Office in Washington. When strolling the streets of Oysterville, one truly feels as though time has stood still for more than one hundred years. Enjoy a walking tour of historic Oysterville, where you’ll learn more about the history of this fascinating town. Visit the Sydney of Oysterville blog to learn more about the town. sydneyofoysterville.com/oysterville-daybook/ The Oysterville Guest House (AirBnB) is the only guest lodging in the town. When in Hawaii buy pineapple. When in Oysterville buy oysters! Bivalves freshly plucked from pristine Willapa Bay are available in a variety of sizes at Oysterville Sea Farms. They also have a variety of of other artisan foods, like handmade granola, scone mixes, sauces, and cranberries.
Swansea, Tasmania, Australia
Gear: Canon 5D Mk II | Canon 17-40 Driving back to Hobart we saw the amazing emerald waters of Swansea. We happened to drive down a road to get a shot of the water and the hazards and being Spring, all the flowers were in bloom along the waterfront. Stunningly beautiful. Here is video of the trip to Tasmania in Spring 2011 with Kane Gledhill and Michael Reed - you can check it out here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNcYL9Y70zE Tasmania in Autumn 2011 can be found here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmjd0WyzkX0 Tasmania in Spring 2010 can be found here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WBGjkiarxc [Facebook Fan Page][ShutterBugs] [Twitter] [iFolio] [iPhone] [SEQ Meetup Group] Swansea The first European to explore the Swansea area was Captain John Henry Cox sailing from England to Sydney. He took his ship, the Mercury up the eastern coast of Tasmania. On 3 July 1789, having heard of vast colonies of seals in the area, he sailed along the western shore of Maria Island and into a stretch of water he named Oyster Bay. Swansea was not settled until 1821 when George Meredith, his family and workers arrived from Pembrokeshire, Wales in 1821. Meredith obtained a grant from Lieutenant Governor William Sorell to farm in the area around Oyster Bay. The land was developed and made suitable for seasonal crops and grazing stock and a tannery and flour mill were established by the Meredith River. Whaling stations were also set up on nearby islands to enable the export of whale oil. Swansea was originally called Great Swanport and Meredith built the family home, Cambria which is now in private hands. There are other important buildings in the town including Morris’ General Store which has been owned and run by the Morris family for over 100 years. The Swansea Bark Mill which processed black wattle bark was used in colonial times in the tanning industry and is now a museum. Schouten House is a fine early Victorian colonial house built in 1844 and is now a hotel.
Robert H. Espy
We visited the Oysterville Cemetery yesterday for the first time in years. I had forgotten how spacious and lovely it is. It's a Who's Who of notables from the hamlet's early days. For example, this the grave marker of Oysterville's co-founder Robert H. Espy. Here's the section of Oysterville's application for entry into the National Register of Historic Places that provides biographical information about Espy: Espy was born February 10, 1826 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. At the age of 15 he was apprenticed to a tailor but worked at that trade only four years. In 1845 he left for Wisconsin, and in 1852, travelled overland to the Pacific coast arriving at The Dalles, Oregon on August 27th. He worked driving an ox-team hauling freight between the Upper and Lower Cascades, wintered in a logging camp, and the following spring, continued on to Astoria where he was employed in a sawmill. That summer Espy met Nahcotte while cutting piling in Pacific county, but returned to Astoria for the winter where he built a cabin and supported himself beachcombing. That winter he apparently met Isaac A. Clark, a young man recently arrived from California where he had some limited success working the gold fields. Originally from New York, Clark was also a tailor who lived for a time in Wisconsin and both men had strong religious convictions. Together with I. A. Clark, Espy set out to keep his appointment with Nahcotte. They traveled on foot and by canoe but some distance from their destination they were engulfed in dense fog that would have prevented further progress had Nahcotte not heard them splashing along in the stillness and signalled by thumping repeatedly on a hollow stump with a spruce knot. They followed the sound as there were no visible reference points to navigate by and eventually they arrived at Nahcotte's camp. The oyster beds proved to be exceptional. Clark and Espy both filed donation land claims Clark and Espy both filed donation land claims and Clark promptly platted a townsite. They built themselves a log cabin with the assistance of the Indian population already living there. Oysters were loaded in a canoe and shuttled across the bay to Bruceport where there was an existing oyster exporting operation (founded in 1851 when a schooner loading a cargo of oysters there was burned to the waterline and sunk by the disgruntled ship's cook who escaped in a rowboat leaving the captain and crew marooned). Soon ships came directly to Oysterville from San Francisco. The price was one dollar in gold for a bushel basket paid on delivery to the schooner which had an average capacity of between 1,200 to 2,000 baskets. Oystermen would frequently trade their payment for supplies arriving on the same ship. Chinook Indians were employed to gather, cull and pack the harvest which amounted to 50,000 baskets a year taken from Shoalwater Bay, most of which came from Oysterville. For the first few years, the beach was open territory for oyster pickers, but soon it became necessary to divide the tidelands into restricted tracts called "whacks" with eight acres set aside for ships at anchor while loading. Eventually, the cash price rose to a dollar and a half a basket. Clark operated a store, and in 1858 was appointed postmaster. Espy continued in the oyster business until he was incapacitated by an illness in 1859. After working a year as lightkeeper of the Shoalwater Bay lighthouse and then mining unsuccessfully in the Blue Mountains, Espy entered into a prosperous partnership with Warren and Company of San Francisco - later known as the Morgan Oyster Company. landmarkhunter.com/188529-oysterville-historic-district/ The Espy Family of Oysterville Author/historian Sydney Stevens says, “I often feel that the Espy family and Oysterville are so inter-related it is hard to know which has had the greatest influence upon the other.” Sydney, herself, is an Espy descendent and lives in Oysterville – the village that her great-grandfather, Robert Hamilton Espy co-founded with Isaac Alonzo Clark in 1854. “It’s simply the way it is.” sydneyofoysterville.com/espy-family-of-oysterville/
Ned Osborne House 1874
Osborne arrived in Oysterville in 1866 aboard the schooner Sailor Boy along with his good friend and neighbor, Charles Nelson. He began building this house for his bride-to-be, continuing to work on it even though she jilted him before the wedding date. When she married another, however, Osborne stopped building and never completed the upstairs bedrooms. He lived a bachelor all his life in this house. www.oysterville.org/walking-tour ====================== In the mid 1800s, the village of Oysterville began to prosper after Chief Nahcati introduced the town’s founders, R.H. Tom Crellin House 1869
A Native American inscription is written above the entrance to this house. It reads: "Tsako-Te-Hahsh-Eetl." It is the place name the Chinook gave to what we call Willapa Bay: For generations before the pioneer settlers arrived, Chinook Indians gathered oysters in this part of Willapa Bay and camped in the area that is now Oysterville. They called it "tsako-te-hahsh-eetl" which, like many Indian words, had two meanings: "place of the red-topped grass" and "home of the yellowhammer." (Yellowhammer is the local name for the red-shafted flicker, a woodpecker common to this region.) www.oysterville.org/oysterville-story Like many of the old houses in the village, the Tom Crellin house was built of redwood lumber brought north as ballast on oyster schooners out of San Francisco. In 1892, after the Crellin family had moved to California, R. H. Espy purchased the house to serve as a parsonage for the new Baptist church. Since 1902 it has been occupied by Espy descendents. www.oysterville.org/walking-tour ====================== The first white settlers here were Robert Hamilton Espy and Isaac Alonzo Clark. They had agreed on a rendezvous with Chief [Nahcati] who had told Espy of nearby tide lands covered with oysters. On April 20, 1854, as they paddled north from the head of the bay, they became engulfed by a heavy fog. Klickeas, having spotted them before the fog rolled in, guided them ashore by rhythmically pounding on a hollow log. The Indian Chief had not exaggerated; reef upon reef of tiny native oysters grew on the shallow bay bottom. Espy and Clark marketed the bivalves in gold-rich, oyster-hungry San Francisco. A peach basket filled with oysters brought a dollar in gold on delivery to a schooner anchored on the tide flats in front of town. That same basket brought $10 on arrival in San Francisco, and epicures in oyster bars and seafood restaurants there would pay a silver dollar for one oyster - an oyster smaller than the dollar! In no time, Oysterville became a rowdy, lusty boomtown. By 1855 its population and importance were such that it became the seat of Pacific County, Washington Territory. The town had many firsts - a school, college, newspaper, and finally, in 1872, a church - First Methodist. It is said that there were those in Oysterville who lived in "sin" and those who lived to be "saved" - about an even division. When the church was dedicated, the hard drinkers abandoned the saloons, marched in a body to the church, put their gold pieces in the collection plate, and returned to what they considered more stimulating than praying - drinking. Late in the 1880s fate took a hand: the long awaited railroad line ended at Nahcotta, an isolating four miles away; the native oysters became scarce and, without the possibility of a local livelihood, residents moved out en masse; finally, in 1893, the courthouse records were stolen by South Bend "raiders." Oysterville gradually became a sleepy little village where "time stood still." To see, in a small way, what Oysterville looked like in the old days, walk down Clay Street opposite the church to the edge of the bay and look back toward the village. You will see the fronts of the old homes which were built facing the bay. The street directly in front of the church, Territory Road, was once called 4th Street; Main Street was about where the easterly white picket fence is now; 1st Street was about where the easterly wire fence is near the bay; and Front Street has been consumed by the tide. Oysterville is proud of its placement on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The Historic District encompasses about 80 acres of the village. www.oysterville.org/oysterville-story The original one-room schoolhouse and church are still in use for community events. Nice sunrise over Botany Bay. I've been wanting to take some sunrise snaps of Port Botany for a while now. Found a great location with some old pier pylons in the foreground which worked out well.
White Fire - Sunset. Bantry Bay Explosive Stores
White Fire. Striking vivid orange blue and white sunset over water through cloud with a tree studded silhouetted horizon.. Photographed at Bantry Bay near the old explosives stores building, Middle Harbour, Sydney, Australia.. . The Bantry Bay Explosives Magazine Complex is located in Garigal National Park and managed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. The Complex occupies an area of around 14 hectares on both the eastern and western shores of the bay and consists of numerous buildings, seawalls, tram lines, wharves, slipways, tracks, dams, and other above-surface remains as well as a number of archaeological sites. It is an important but little known part of the cultural, and natural, heritage of Sydney.. Bantry Bay is part of the traditional lands of the Guringai/Gai-Mariagal Aboriginal people. The Guringai/Gai-Mariagal people made extensive use of the area for tens of thousands of years prior to the arrival of European settlers. Numerous rock engraving sites and shell middens, some dated to at least 4,600 years old, can still be seen in the area today as tangible evidence of this Aboriginal past. It is likely that Aboriginal people continued to use the area for fishing and shellfish collecting until they were gradually dispossessed by European settlement and disease.. European use of this area in the early 1800s initially focussed on lime burning, fishing, oyster gathering and wood cutting. The pioneer of the area, Constable and Crown Lands Ranger James French (after whom Frenchs Forest is named), started the first local timber industry around 1856. He located his sawmill on the hill above Bantry Bay, and made a track for his bullock team to drag the wood down to a wharf, from where it was shipped to Sydney. This “Old Bullock Track” remains today, with cobbles, culverts and the remains of a stone bridge visible amongst the bushland..
Broadway Beauties: (Former) Bank of New South Wales, Central Sydney.
The Bank of New South Wales has occupied this site continuously from the 1860s. It was part of an important financial group; a gold refinery and smelter was based in the next building making the bank important in the gold bullion trade. The building now on this site dates from 1894. It was designed by Varney Parkes and was built by the McLeod Brothers at a contract price of 17,400 pounds. It was substantially extended in 1915 to a design by John Reid. At the same time alterations were made to the existing building. John Reid & Son continued to be responsible for changes to the building during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1921 for example, the firm designed a garage and coke bunker. Throughout the later 1940s and 1950s several alterations were made to the offices including major works by Robertson & Marks in 1949. Another significant program of alterations and additions was initiated in 1969 at a cost of $90,000. In 1975, alterations were made to the ground floor. The final and significant work on the building occurred in 1989-90 when Westpac undertook a program to refurbish the building. Significance: The Westpac Bank at 824-826 George Street is listed on Schedule 1 and the Heritage Streetscape Map in the Heritage LEP 2000. The bank is an important record of the influence and distribution of banking in the centralised pattern of commercial development in central Sydney. It was also associated with the gold smelting operations of the Bank of NSW. The combination of the two functions is unusual and it is considered of regional significance. It is also associated with Varney Parkes, a prominent and skilled architect in late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The Wespac Bank illustrates a rare use of the Federation Romanesque style in a bank building, being well proportioned and skilfully detailed. It is a significant landmark on a prominent corner of George Street, designed to accentuate its location through corner chamfer, arched main entry and cupolas above the parapet. ✓✓ Criteria A: Historical significance: The Westpac Bank at the corner of George and Regent Streets records the influence and distribution of banking in central Sydney up to the turn of the century. Originally built as the Bank of NSW it was associated with a gold smelting operation for bullion, which is unusual. The building was designed by prominent architect Varney Parkes, son of Sir Henry Parkes. It contributes to documenting the growth of Sydney at the turn of the century. ✓✓ Criteria C: Aesthetic significance. A trough from gold smeltering activities remains extant in the basement. The corrugated steel used as permanent formwork for concrete floor above the basement is characteristic of late nineteenth century building technology. The Westpac Bank demonstrates an unusual use of the Federation Romanesque style in a city commercial building, creating a refined image for, what was at the time, the major Bank in Australia. An arched entry and cupolas at a chamfered corner distinguish the building and contribute to its strong streetscape presence. Its has a landmark presence at a prominent corner on George Street. A three storey eastern addition, although more Italianate in style, complements the original well. ✓✓ Criteria F: Rarity. The Westpac Bank at 824-826 George Street is a rare and well executed example of the Federation Romanesque style for a branch bank. Few Romanesque style buildings of the Federation period exist. Although on a smaller scale, the Westpac Bank compares favourably architecturally with the Queen Victoria Building. The association of the Bank of NSW with gold smelting operations is rare. The shucked oysters were on display and mostly in the price range of $12-16 per dozen. This contrasts dramatically with the $17-20 per half dozen in most of the restaurants. These were fresh Moulting Bay Pacific oysters.

Port Botany Sunrise 2
This was the first shot I took when I arrived at the foreshore of Botany Bay. The lights of Port Botany reminded me a bit of something out of ET. There was also a light mist in the air which helped emphasise the lights. This was a 7 frame HDR composite. Shot with a D200, f4, Exposures from 0.5 sec to 28 seconds. Tokina 12-24mm lens @ 18mm.
